CCNSG or CSCS?

Both cards prove you're trained to work safely on site, but they're used in different parts of the industry. Here's how to work out which one you need.

Ask a room full of contractors about site cards and you’ll hear two names again and again: CSCS and CCNSG. Both show that you’ve been trained to work safely, and both are checked at the gate. But they come from different parts of the industry, and holding one doesn’t automatically mean you have what the other site wants. Here’s how they compare, and how to work out which one you need.

The CSCS card in brief

CSCS stands for the Construction Skills Certification Scheme. It’s the main card scheme for the building and civil engineering side of construction: housing, commercial buildings, infrastructure and similar projects. A CSCS card shows that the holder has the training and qualifications for the type of work they do on site.

There are different CSCS cards for different roles and levels, from labourers to managers. For most of them, you need to pass a health, safety and environment test, and many cards also depend on holding a relevant qualification, such as an NVQ.

The CCNSG Safety Passport in brief

The CCNSG Safety Passport comes from the Client/Contractor National Safety Group and is awarded by the ECITB, the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board. It’s widely used on engineering construction, manufacturing and process sites, where clients want contractors to arrive with a common standard of safety training.

Instead of a test centre exam, the passport is earned through a two-day course. You’re assessed during the course through case studies and group work, and there’s a multiple-choice test at the end. When you pass, you receive a card that’s valid for three years.

Which one do you need?

The honest answer is: the one your site asks for. Requirements are set by site owners and principal contractors, and they vary. Some general guidance:

If you work on engineering construction or process sites, a CCNSG Safety Passport is very often the card that’s requested. It’s common in maintenance, shutdown and installation work.

If you work on building sites, a CSCS card is usually expected, and the type of card depends on your trade and qualifications.

If you move between both kinds of work, you may well need both. Many contractors hold a CSCS card for building projects and a CCNSG passport for engineering sites, and keep both up to date.

Before you book anything, ask your employer, agency or the site’s principal contractor exactly what they’ll accept. It’s the quickest way to avoid paying for training you don’t need, or turning up at the gate with the wrong card.

Questions to ask before you book

When you check with your employer or the site, a few specific questions save time:

  • Which card, or cards, does the site require for my role?
  • Is there a minimum level, such as a supervisor card or the Leading a Team Safely element?
  • Will an in-date card be needed on my first day, or is there a grace period?
  • Does the company book and pay for the training, or do I?

Can one replace the other?

Generally, no. The two schemes are separate, and a site that asks for one won’t necessarily accept the other. Some topics overlap, such as risk, fire safety and manual handling, so if you already hold one card, you’ll find parts of the other course familiar. That can make the training feel easier, but it doesn’t change what the site requires.

Keeping your cards current

Whichever cards you hold, keep an eye on the expiry dates. A CCNSG Safety Passport lasts three years, and you renew it with a one-day course within three months of the expiry date. Set a reminder as soon as you receive your card so you’re never caught out.
