Renewing your CCNSG passport
Your CCNSG Safety Passport lasts three years. Here's when to renew it, what the renewal course involves and how to avoid getting caught out.
A CCNSG Safety Passport opens the gate to a lot of engineering construction and process sites. But it doesn’t last forever. Your card is valid for three years, and if you let it lapse, you could be turned away on the morning of a job. Here’s how renewal works and how to plan it so you’re never caught out.
How long does the passport last?
The ECITB CCNSG Safety Passport card is valid for three years from the date you pass the course. The expiry date is printed on your card, so check it now and make a note of it.
When should you renew?
To keep your passport current, you take a one-day renewal course within three months of your card’s expiry date. Booking inside that window lets you renew with the shorter course instead of starting again.
The simplest way to stay on top of it is to set two reminders as soon as you get your card:
- About four months before expiry, to look at dates and book your place.
- About one month before expiry, as a final check that your renewal is booked.
Courses can fill up, so it pays to book early rather than leaving it to the last few weeks.
Why renewal matters
Safety training isn’t a one-off. Over three years, regulations are updated, sites introduce new procedures, and it’s easy for good habits to slip. The renewal course refreshes the essentials so that the card in your pocket still reflects what you know and how you work. For employers, an up-to-date passport is also a simple way to show that their contractors’ training is current, which is why many sites check expiry dates at the gate.
What does the renewal course cover?
The renewal course is a one-day refresher. It revisits the core safety topics from the original two-day course and brings you up to date. You can expect to cover subjects such as:
- Safety behaviours and your responsibilities on site
- Risks, hazards and risk assessments
- Fire safety and emergency procedures
- Manual handling
- Confined spaces, asbestos and hazardous substances
- Reporting accidents, near misses and RIDDOR
As with the original course, you’re assessed on the day, and you’ll receive a renewed card when you pass.
What if your passport has already expired?
If your card has already expired, don’t assume you can still take the one-day renewal course. Depending on how long it has lapsed, you may need to take the full two-day course again. Get in touch with your training provider, tell them your card’s expiry date, and they’ll tell you which course you need.
This is the main reason to plan ahead. Missing the renewal window can turn a one-day refresher into two days away from work.
Renewing with Leading a Team Safely
If you supervise others, you may also hold, or want to add, the CCNSG Leading a Team Safely element. It’s an extra day of training focused on the responsibilities of people who lead small teams on site. When you renew, ask whether you can renew or add this element at the same time.
Renewing for a whole team
If several people in your company have passports expiring around the same time, it can be more efficient to renew together. Knight Learning can run training at your premises for groups of three or more, which saves travel and lets you choose dates that fit around your work.
A shared spreadsheet of everyone’s expiry dates is a simple way to spot when a group booking makes sense, and to make sure nobody’s card lapses unnoticed.
Tips for the day
- Bring photo ID and your current or expired card.
- Arrive on time. You need to attend the whole course to pass.
- Refresh your memory of the main topics beforehand, especially if it has been three years since your original course.
- Ask questions. Rules and best practice change, and the renewal is your chance to catch up.
